Emergency response network provider says healthcare better prepared than ever
VERONA, NJ (May 5, 2009) — On April 29 the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic alert to level 5 and urged all countries to immediately activate their national influenza preparedness plans. Many U.S. healthcare industry observers were left wondering if the U.S. is headed for an "Infectious Katrina" experience.
Not so, according to Nathaniel Weiss, founder and CEO of LiveProcess, the market leader in web-based emergency preparedness and incident management solutions for hospitals and healthcare organizations.
"This story has gone from pig farms to hospital ER waiting rooms," said Weiss. "Hospitals are the frontline of this crisis, and now people are wondering, can hospitals handle the surge?"
Weiss believes, however, that the nations hospitals are better prepared than ever to meet the challenges of the mounting "swine flu" outbreak, which leading health authorities now believe is on the verge of becoming a global pandemic.
Weiss founded LiveProcess in 2003 following the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak. With the events of 9/11 and the SARS crises still fresh, Weiss established the company to address a critical and unmet need for healthcare facilities to better plan for and respond to disasters.
As the market leader in technology tools for healthcare emergency management, LiveProcess disaster readiness and incident command solutions have the exclusive endorsement of the American Hospital Association (AHA). LiveProcess is implemented in hundreds of hospitals nationwide with thousands of users.
The platform allows healthcare emergency management professionals to conduct pandemic flu drills and exercises, track compliance to regulations, monitor critical beds, supply inventories and personnel and most importantly, effectively manage events such as disasters, large-scale emergencies and public health threats in real time.
LiveProcess participated in the largest U.S. pandemic flu exercise in history with 190 facilities of the Georgia Hospital Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Six days before WHO escalated H1N1 to its current level, the company set up a dedicated web-based "swine flu community event log" to help member facilities communicate and share best practices in real-time about the emerging swine flu threat. Since April 24, more than 100 LiveProcess hospitals and clinics have been monitoring the log and sharing resources.
"If we can learn from what weve been through—from 9/11 to Katrina—and learn how essential it is to be prepared, we will get through this crisis," Weiss said. "Based on what we know about the state of readiness among LiveProcess users, I am confident of that."
